2018 was hard, and Charged wasn't here enough. We're coming back!

A NOTE FROM OWEN

Hey!

2018 was a year of highs and lows for the technology, with much more criticality than when I kicked Charged off more than three years ago. Times have changed, and it seems many of us are finally ready to truly question the motives of the technology companies that serve us.

In 2019, as we come to grips with these new realities, the big question in my mind is whether or not the wider population will question new technologies and ideas before they become mainstream. Will we allow voice assistants to invade every possible space, or will we designate places A.I. free? I'm not sure anything has truly changed outside of the sentiment of the media, but I'm looking forward to finding out, together.

Over the space of 2018, I struggled to send this newsletter regularly for a number of reasons. After 180 editions spanning over more than three years, it was difficult to figure out how to make it work alongside my new consulting business. The days seemed much shorter, and weekends were precious, but Charged weekly ultimately suffered, often not arriving at all.

As I went through this I considered stopping the weekly newsletter, but have come to realize that it was an important part of Charged that many of you valued, especially as the conversation in the industry began to evolve so rapidly and unpredictably.

In 2019, I'm excited to get back to this newsletter, and continue to push it forward in new ways. From this weekend onward, I'm planning to send each week's edition in time for your Saturday morning, filled with news, great links and other thoughts. We're back, and I'll be doubling down on what made you subscribe in the first place.

The weekly newsletter exists alongside our weekday briefing, which helps turn this into something sustainable. For a few dollars a month you can keep up to date more regularly, without having to figure out why a piece of news matters or be subjected to advertising.

If you like this, you'll love it, and with just 150 more members we'll be sustainable long-term, so if you've ever considered signing up, I'd appreciate it if you joined me in building something better!

I'm excited to get back into the swing of things in 2019, and hope to have you along with us. As the year unfolds, we'll unpack what matters wherever you're subscribing and help you wade through the noise. If there's anything you'd love to see more (or less) of, just hit reply! I love talking to all of you.

See you this weekend, and thanks for being a member.

A FEW GOOD LONG READS

Start with a website, not an app

If you're a startup building something new and don't need sensor-level access to a device, it's never been cheaper to quickly build and test an idea out. The web has come an incredibly long way, allowing a new generation of companies to ship fast, without high costs... let alone waiting days for a new build of an app to be reviewed.

SOMETHING NEW

Learn to write in 2019

A new experiment I created over the break for a change of pace: Write Together, a network of people learning the art of writing through the power of habit. I often get asked how to learn writing, and my only answer is truly: just do it. I'm hoping Write Together can help, and I'd love to see you there.
